How It Works

Filament is a cylinder of plastic with a known diameter and material density. The relationship between weight and length is derived from the volume of a cylinder.

Weight → Length

Given a filament weight W (in grams), diameter d (in mm), and material density ρ (in g/cm³):

  1. Volume = W / ρ (cm³)
  2. Cross-sectional area = π × (d/2)² (convert mm to cm first)
  3. Length = Volume / Area (cm, then convert to meters)

Length → Weight

Given a filament length L (in meters):

  1. Cross-sectional area = π × (d/2)² (in cm²)
  2. Volume = Area × L × 100 (cm³)
  3. Weight = Volume × ρ (grams)

Common Material Densities

  • PLA: 1.24 g/cm³
  • ABS: 1.04 g/cm³
  • PETG: 1.27 g/cm³
  • TPU: 1.21 g/cm³
  • Nylon: 1.14 g/cm³
  • ASA: 1.07 g/cm³
